TYPE OF DRUG: Proton- pump inhibitor
Generic ingredients: Omeprazole
Prilosec is prescribed for stomach or duodenal (upper intestinal) ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which there is an excess of stomach acid.
Prilosec is also used to treat and maintain healing of ulcers of the esophagus.
Prilosec (proton pump inhibitors stop the production of stomach at the last stage of acid production. Prilosec (PPIs) can turn off stomach acid production within 1hours. These are drugs useful in treating conditions in which stomach acid plays a key role, as with ulcers and Gerd. It is prescribed together with amoxicillin and clarithromycin for people with ulcers caused by Heliobacter Pylori infection.
Caution and Warning
Do not take Prilosec if you are allergic to it. Prolonged use of Prilosec is not recommended. Prilosec should not be used as maintenance treatment for duodenal ulcers and are not recommended for (GERD) for more the 8 to 16 weeks.
Prilosec (PPIs) should be taken immediately before taking a meal, preferably breakfast. Esomeprazole must be taken at least 1hour before a meal.
SIDE EFFECTS OF PRILOSEC
Prilosec has a few side effects.
Prilosec can cause headaches, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Prilosec can cause Nausea, sore throat and upper respiratory infection.
Prilosec can cause fever, vomiting, dizziness and rash.
Prilosec can cause constipation and mused pain. Prilosec can cause some other rare side effects. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the side effects not listed above.
Prilosec Drug interactions
Prilosec (PPIs) may increase the effect of diazepam, phenytoin and warfarin. They may also interact with other drugs broken down by the liver.
Combining PPIs and Clarithromycin may increase blood level of both drugs.
Prilosec (PPIs) may interfere with the absorption of iron ampicillin, and ketoconazole. Prilosec (PPIs) may increase the effect of drugs that reduce the production of blood cells by bone marrow.
Lansoprazole may reduce the amount of the ophyline drugs in the blood.
Prilosec overdose
There is not much information about a Prilosec overdose.
In a Prilosec (PPIs) overdose the symptoms are likely to resemble the side effects call your local poison center in case of an overdose of Prilosec.
If the patient has an overdose of Prilosec he or she may have to be taken to an emergency ward in a hospital.
Incase of an overdose of any drug carry the prescription or bottle or container to show to the doctor.
If the patient is taking Prilosec and feels tired or weak call the doctor.
Prilosec can have other side effects like sore throat, fever, sores in the mouth that do not heal.
Prilosec can cause unusual bleeding or bruising.
Prilosec can cause bloody or cloudy urine. Prilosec can cause other urinary difficulties or any persistent or bothersome side effects. Take the full course of Prilosec even if your symptoms improve after 1 or 2 weeks.
Do not open or crush the Prilosec capsule. Swallow the Prilosec capsule whole.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember but if it is almost time to take the next dose, skip the one you forgot and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose. Prilosec is toxic to pregnant animals.
When your doctor considers this drug useful weigh the pros and cons. It is not known if Prilosec passes into breast milk but as a precaution give bottle milk to the infant if the mother is taking Prilosec.
Drug Interactions

Lansoprazole
Adult: 30 mg 2 or 3 times a day. Capsules may be opened and mixed with a tablespoon of cool applesause for people having difficulty in swallowing. Dosage may be increased upto 120 mg a day. People with liver disease need a lower dosage.
Child: (under age 18): not recommended.
Omeprazole
Adult: 40 mg once a day for days 1-14 then 20 mg once a day for days 15-28. Antacids may be taken with Omeprazole.
Child: (age3 years -13 years): 20-60mg a day.
Child: (under age 3): 0.022 mg per lb. of body weight a day.
Pantoprazole
Adult: 40 mg once a day, preferably in the morning, for 4-8 weeks. A second 8-week course of treatment may be prescribed.
Prevpac
2 Amoxicillin (Trimox) capsules, 1 Clarithromycin (Biaxin) tablet, and 1 lansoprazole (Prevacid) capsule before breakfast and before dinner for 14 days.
Rabeprazole
Adult: 20 mg a day.
Child (under 18): not recommended.
