Nexium is prescribed for patients who have stomach or duodenal ailments such as upper intestinal ulcers, gastro esophageal reflux disease (Gerd).
Nexium is used when there is excess of stomach acid.
Nexium is used to treat and maintain healing of the esophagus. Nexium has proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which stop the production of stomach acid by interfering with the "proton pump" in the mucous lining of the stomach at the last stages of acid production.
Nexium drug is useful in treating condition in which stomach acid plays a key role, as with ulcers and Gerd.
The physician usually prescribes Nexium together with amoxicillin and clarithromycin for people with ulcers caused by Heliobacter pylori infection.
PRECAUTION IN TAKING NEXIUM
Do not take PPIs if you are allergic to it. PPIs should not be used as maintenance treatment for duodenal ulcers and are not recommended for treatment of Gerd beyond 8 to 16 weeks.
If a person is suffering from any liver disease they should take Nexium in lower doses as recommended by the physician.
SIDE EFFECT OF NEXIUM
Generally Nexium causes few side effects. Those that may occur include headaches diarrhea. Abdominal pain, nausea, sore throat, upper respiratory infection, fever vomiting, dizziness, rash constipation, muscle pain, fatigue, cough, and back pain.
Your physician should be told if any of the above side effects happen.
DRUG INTERACTION
Nexium (PPIs) may interact with drugs that are broken down by the liver. Nexium may increase the effect of diazepam, phenytoins and warfarin.
Nexium (PPIs) when combined with clarithromycin may increase blood levels of both drugs.
If a person is taking Nexium interference with the absorption of ampicillin, Ketoconazole and iron may happen.
Production of blood cells by bone marrow can be hampered, by using Nexium.
Lansoprazole may reduce the amount of theophyline drugs in the blood.
Food Interactions
Nexium (PPIs) should be taken immediately before a meal, preferably breakfast. Esomeprazole must be taken at least 1 hour before a meal.
Usual Dose
Esomeprazole
Adult: 20-40 mg a day, 1 hour before a meal. Capsules may be opened and mixed with a tablespoon of cool applesauce for people having difficulty swallowing. Eat the mixture right away and do not chew the pellets.
Nexium is not recommended for a child under age 18 yrs:
Lansoprazole
Adult: 30 mg 2or 3 times a day. Capsules may be opened and mixed with a tablespoon of cool applesauce for people having difficulty swallowing. Dosage may be increased upto 120 mg a day. People with liver disease need a lower dosage.
Lansoprazole is not recommended for a child under 18 yrs of age.
Omeprazole
Adult: 40mg once a day 1-14 days then 20 mg once a day for 15-28 days. Antacid may be taken with omeprazole.
Child: (age 3 years -13years):20-60mg a day. Child (under age 3 months):0.22mg per lb body weight a day.
Pantoprazole
Adult: 40 mg once a day, preferably in the morning, for 4-8 weeks. A second 8-week course of treatment may be prescribed.
Prevpac
2 amoxicillin (Trimox) capsules, 1 clarithromycin (Biaxin) tablet, and 1 lansoprazole (prevacid) capsule before breakfast and dinner for 14 days.
Rabeprazole
Adult: 20 mg a day.
Child (under 18): not recommended.
Overdosage
Little is known about the effect of PPI overdose. Symptoms are likely to resemble side effects. Call your local poison control center or a hospital emergency room for more information. If you seek treatment, Always bring the prescription bottle or container.
Special Information
Fatigue or weakness after taking Nexium should be reported to the Doctor. Other symptoms due to taking Nexium like sore throat, fever, sores in the mouth that take too much time to heal, unusual bleeding or bruising, bloody or cloudy urine, urinary difficulties or any persistent or bothersome side effects.
Special care should be taken to complete the course of Nexium even if one starts to feel better after one or two weeks.
The Nexium capsule should be taken whole without crushing or chewing.
If you forget to take Nexium do not repeat the dose.
Special Population
Pregnancy / Breast-Feeding
PPIs may be toxic to pregnant animals. When your doctor considers this drug crucial, its potential benefits must be carefully weighed against its risks.
It is not know if PPIs pass into breast milk. Nursing mothers who use this drug should consider bottle-feeling.
Seniors
Seniors report the same side effects as younger adults.
